Dyno Day at Privateer's Garage

The great folks at Privateer's Garage held a Dyno Day at their location.

I was a little hesitant to put the 1125R on the dyno, as it's just barely broken in, but decided to do it just to get a baseline so I can make comparisons later when I start adding mods.

Here Louie from L & L Motorsports is doing the initial calibration and set-up.

This is the initial run.

Checking results.

The bike pulled 124.56 HP at around 136 Mph. Not bad!

If you'd like to join other Buell riders at events like this, we'd be happy to meet you. Check out our calendar at http://www.meetup.com/SoCal-Buell-Riders/

Support Buell Racers

Shawn Higbee is one of the top Buell racers on the circuit today, and a lot of attention that Buells get can be traced back to him and his racing team.

Now we can show our support for Higbee Racing by buying a t-shirt (or five). They're actually pretty sharp-looking T-shirts, and I've already ordered one.

Buell Patent Application Leaks Dirtbike Design?

We've all heard rumors of a dirtbike from Buell before. There's been speculation on what form that machine might take. Much of it centered around the idea that the Ulysses would serve as the starting platform for Buell's dedicated closed-track, off-road machine.

A search of patent filings at the US Patent office found an intriguing image buried in an application for a patent for what is described as "A motorcycle frame having integral fuel tank and airbox." While that might ring familiar with owners of any recent Buell offering, the really juicy part comes when you go to the trouble of downloading an applet to view the accompanying images/drawings that come with that patent application.

Purported leaks in the past have come up with images such as the one below from speedzilla.com that shows an XB-derived bike with the trademark Buell fuel-in-frame and ZTL front brake:

Or this one from automotive.com:

Looking a lot more like the latter image is this drawing from the Buell patent application. Is this the long-lost (and perhaps soon-to-be-resurrected) Buell dirtbike?

And here is that patent application we found:

It's been thought that this project was scrapped in order to devote resources to the rollout of the Rotax-engined Buell 1125R and 1125CR models, but with their launch in the rearview mirror, how long until we see another, more rough-and-tumble member of the Buell motorcycle family?

BBQ at SD Harley; Highland Valley Ride

Saturday saw three members of the SoCal Buell Riders make it to the BBQ at San Diego Harley. It was good to finally start putting faces to the nicknames. Erik rode all the way down from Murrieta on his Firebolt. Fran showed off her personalized Magna with the custom purple saddle. Wolf pulled up on his 1125R.

We left postcards with the staff, letting people know about the group, and left some on various Buells parked in the lot. Fran even corralled Aaron, who works there, when he tried to ride past us on his 1125R.

I made sure to wear a t-shirt from Privateer's Garage, one of our sponsors, and got to talk to a few people about what they do. One of the people I spoke with about them was Joanne, from American SportBike, another sponsor. I think those two companies would be great working together. American SportBike provides super high-quality upgrades to Buell riders, and Privateer's Garage provides a clean, organized, well-stocked place to work on your bike.

After the BBQ, Erik and Wolf geared up to hit Higland Valley Road between Ramona and Escondido. It's a nice, backcountry road with a few challenging hairpins, some of which also have a lot of elevation changes. If anyone wants to give that ride a try, just let us know!

Two more Sponsors for SoCal Buell Riders

We're very excited to have the help and support of AmericanSportBike and California Superbike School.

AmericanSportBike sells aftermarket parts for Buells, most notably their absolutely beautiful carbon fiber parts. They're a great resource for any Buell owner. Aside from selling great stuff, they also support the Buell community be hosting rides, customer appreciation days, etc.

Keith Code's California Superbike School has also agreed to sponsor us, and I'll have some amazing news to report on something he's offered our group (but I'm saving that for a later post. Stay tuned!). California Superbike School is the school to go to for aspiring racers and motorcyclists who want to hone their skills. It's all about the corners.

San Diego Harley now a Sponsor

The great folks at San Diego Harley-Davidson have agreed to sponsor us, and I'm blown away by their enthusiasm.

They've offered to allow us to have monthly meetings there, and provide us with food as well.

It's a real easy location right off the 163 on Kearny Mesa Rd. I'm going to be there tomorrow afternoon, if anyone else wants to say howdy.

Did you know they're the number one Buell dealership in the US? We ought to be seeing a lot more Buells on the road and in our meetups soon!

Privateer's Garage signs up as a Sponsor. Members get 20% off garage time

Privateer's Garage has signed on as SoCal Buell Riders' first sponsor.

They're offering a 20% discount on garage time for all SoCal Buell Riders members.

This place is a clean, well-stocked do-it-yourself garage where you can bring your bike in, put in on a lift and do your maintenance instead of crawling around on your garage floor, or heading off to buy a snap-ring plier you'll only use once.

They also hold clinics on performance tuning, Dyno days, etc. Good folks. Check them out.
